Every day I'm grateful to have a business that allows me to work from home; with costs of commuting rising steadily, the financial benefits of a home based business are huge, in addition to more direct personal benefits and avoiding health risks associated with what's been called "extreme commuting."
Sometimes I am especially thankful to be able to walk across the house to my office instead of having to get dressed and get in the car and go, and the last few weeks has been one of those times.
We had a series of snowstorms here in Southern Colorado that brought the largest snowfall in decades. The storms were beautiful, although dangerous for many, and a lot of work for people to dig out and even shovel their roofs to keep them from caving in. Less than 50 miles south of here, the New Mexico National Guard was called in to help the residents of the tiny town of Chama with the aftermath of the storm. Yet in spite of the heavy snow and at times strong winds, we never lost power and I was able to keep working, warm and cozy while I watched the storms, and everywhere people were dealing with challenges.
Over the last three and a half weeks I've also been doing a treatment on my face with Carac cream, after putting it off for months. Many years of worshiping the sun – especially before we knew how important it was to use sunscreen – have caught up with me, and this treatment is a preventive measure to ward off skin cancer. Which is the good news. The bad news is that it turns your face into a kind of war zone. My experience hasn't been as bad as this guy in the pictures – either before or during treatment - but I was in no shape to go out in public. So I stocked up on groceries, called on friends and family so I didn't have to go anywhere, and handled my work with no interruptions. This wouldn't have been possible in my former job. Much of my time spent inspecting child care centers, and I think my face might have scared the young ones!
So count me among those who have no desire to go back to a traditional work setting!
